Ten Biblical Reasons to Avoid Abusing Alcohol

10.

Abusing alcohol makes me poor.  “Do not carouse with drunkards and gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty.”—Proverbs 23:20-21a

9.

Abusing alcohol might influence another to take the first step to hell.  “Don’t eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another to stumble.”—Romans 14:21

8.

Abusing alcohol causes me pain.  “Who has anguish?  Who has sorrow?  Who is always fighting?  Who is always complaining?  Who has unnecessary bruises?  Who has bloodshot eyes?  It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks.”—Proverbs 23:29-30

7.

Abusing alcohol leads to immoral behavior.  “One day he became drunk on some wine he had made, and lay naked in his tent.”—Genesis 9:21

6.

Abusing alcohol will rob me of my salvation.  “Don’t fool yourselves.  Those who indulge in sexual sin, who are idol worshipers, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, abusers, and swindlers--none of these will have a share in the kingdom of God.”—1 Corinthians 6:9b-10

5.

Abusing alcohol blurs my spiritual perspective.  “Night is the time for sleep and the time when people get drunk.  But let us who live in the light think clearly, protected by the body armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.”—1 Thessalonians 5:7-8

4.

Abusing alcohol destroys my values.  “Destruction is certain for those who are heroes when it comes to drinking, who boast about all the liquor they can hold.  They take bribes to pervert justice.  They let the wicked go free while punishing the innocent.”—Isaiah 5:22-23

3.

Abusing alcohol lowers my moral inhibitions.  “So that night they got him drunk again, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him.  As before, he was unaware of her lying down or getting up again.  So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.”—Genesis 19:35-36

2.

Abusing alcohol disqualifies me from church leadership.  “An elder must live a blameless life because he is God’s minister.  He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or greedy for money.”—Titus 1:7

1.

Abusing alcohol places me under the wrong influence.  “Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life.  Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.”—Ephesians 5:18
