Who Were We?...
The Living Streams Church of Christ has been in existence since 2002. The Spirit of God put it on the hearts and minds of individuals in Abilene, Texas, to plant a church in the Pacific Northwest, more specifically, Portland, Oregon, months before it was launched as a church. Those individuals convinced the leadership of Southern Hills Church of Christ to fund and support a ministry team to facilitate the planting of a church in Portland and their demographic research suggested that the Happy Valley community, an eastern suburb of Portland, would be an ideal location for a new church plant. In 2002, weeks and months of planning, prayer, and organization all came together when the Living Streams Church of Christ held its first public gathering.
Living Streams Church of Christ over the past six years has been on quite a journey. It has impacted the lives of dozens of people in the spiritual birth process and the spiritual development process of all who have come in contact with this church community. Many have discovered new paths in their spiritual journey and have chosen other faith communities to carry out the call of God in their lives.
In 2007, Living Streams Church of Christ transitioned from having had a full time preaching minister, a full time ministry office, and weekly gatherings in a local elementary school to no paid ministry, eventually no ministry office, and meeting once per month at the school. Other Sundays of the month became relationship building time for the church family as they met in small group communities on Sunday evenings.
Who Are We?...
The Living Streams community of believers in Jesus Christ is still intact as a spiritual community. We no longer meet at the elementary school at all but instead, we meet every Sunday evening in various homes. Although we do not have a formal sanctuary, a formal pastor or ministers, formal musical worship, formal liturgy, a formal sound system, or formal anything else, we have relationship. We have discovered in our journey over the past year that God has called us to three key ingredients to a healthy faith community:
| > Prayer | > Trust God | > "One Another" |
We are strongly committed to the future of Living Streams. We will continue to meet in homes as a house church as long as God bonds us together. It is our prayer, hope, and desire that as we grow spiritually as individuals and as a community, our intimacy of relationship with God and "one another" will become so infectious that we will one day be faced with the challenge of whether we should consider a more public forum than homes. But we will always trust in God to take us to the next step.
